{"id":40,"date":"2006-10-29T22:38:05","date_gmt":"2006-10-30T02:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dementedramblings.com\/?p=40"},"modified":"2006-10-29T22:38:05","modified_gmt":"2006-10-30T02:38:05","slug":"adventures-and-misadventures-in-cuisine-weekend-wrapup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dementedramblings.com\/?p=40","title":{"rendered":"Adventures and Misadventures in cuisine: Weekend wrapup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you try to asphyxiate your guests.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend was filled with experimentation for me.\u00c2\u00a0 Let&#8217;s start with the pumpkin.<\/p>\n<p>Or not.\u00c2\u00a0 See, I went to the farmer&#8217;s market in search of pie pumpkins.\u00c2\u00a0 I was determined to give another shot to making a pumpkin pie from scratch, it&#8217;s been years since my first and last attempt (which was a miserable failure).\u00c2\u00a0 The guy at the market convinced me to purchase a couple of these guys instead.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reimerseeds.com\/images\/products\/squash\/NewEnglandBlueHubbard.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Grey and knobby, but he swore it&#8217;d make an even better pie than the pumpkins.\u00c2\u00a0 This strange creature is a blue hubbard squash.\u00c2\u00a0 I seeded, peeled, cubed and steamed them, then pureed them.\u00c2\u00a0 Looked like baby poop.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, that&#8217;s what pureed pumpkin looks like, so we were right on.<\/p>\n<p>Out of that puree I made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marthastewart.com\/page.jhtml?type=content&#038;id=recipe4670358&amp;contentGroup=EDF&#038;layout=edf\">Ginger Pumpkin bread<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 (thanks <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.blogger.com\/comment.g?blogID=28246383&#038;postID=1816432398605560824\">Cumin and Coriander<\/a>) and a pie and still have enough puree to do something else.\u00c2\u00a0 Plus I roasted up the seeds but they were gone by this morning.<\/p>\n<p>I also made a big batch of chili.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d never made chili from scratch before, I think I prefer doing it a la chili magic because it comes out consistently good that way.\u00c2\u00a0 But, the men-folk rather liked my chili.\u00c2\u00a0 Pop deemed it &#8220;so-so&#8221; but ate 3 big servings.<\/p>\n<p>Last christmas, my uncle and I were talking about his mom.\u00c2\u00a0 She was from England and made all sorts of things for him growing up that I&#8217;d never had.\u00c2\u00a0 He spoke of particularly missing her yorkshire puddings.\u00c2\u00a0 I made a mental note at that time to try to make them sometime soon and to invite him over.\u00c2\u00a0 When you are a procrastinator like I am, &#8220;sometime soon&#8221; quite often equates to 10 months away.<\/p>\n<p>Today I cooked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/food\/recipes\/recipe\/0,,FOOD_9936_15691,00.html?rsrc=search\">Alton Brown&#8217;s pot roast<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 and Jamie Oliver&#8217;s yorkies.\u00c2\u00a0 The pot roast was ok, but I think I&#8217;ll stick with my usual pressure cooker roast, it turns out tastier and more tender.\u00c2\u00a0 The olives and raisins made for a damned strange gravy too.\u00c2\u00a0 The yorkies were my biggest learning experience of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Per Jamie&#8217;s directions, I put a half inch of oil in my muffin cups, preheated it until super hot, and poured in the batter.\u00c2\u00a0 Only the oil overflowed in the oven (use a quarter inch next time!) and smoked up the house like whoa!\u00c2\u00a0 Much coughing and wheezing ensued.\u00c2\u00a0 I opened the back door and put the fan in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>How&#8217;d they turn out?\u00c2\u00a0 Evidently just right.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, huh. \u00c2\u00a0 However, I poured an entire box of baking soda into the oven to soak up all of the oil on the bottom of it.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll finish cleaning that tomorrow.\u00c2\u00a0 I believe we&#8217;ll have a few days of leftovers to let me recuperate from my weekend in the kitchen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you try to asphyxiate your guests.
